Doug Breitbart is a ceramic artist and stone carver based in New York City. Inspired by patterns in nature, Art Deco design and the constant visual stimulation of the city, Doug’s ceramics are one-of-a-kind pieces that are prized by collectors. Each work is meticulously crafted, thrown on the wheel, then lushly decorated using a variety of slip decorating and glazing techniques. In most cases, the pieces are fired in a wood-burning kiln which gives the surfaces a luminous quality
Doug Breitbart studied ceramics and sculpture at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA and in Rome, Italy where he received his B.F.A. degree. His teachers included noted ceramacists Robert & Paula Winokur.
Doug’s studio is located Long Island City, NY where he currently works with porcelain and white stoneware. For many years he has participated in wood firings under the direction of Bruce Dehnert at Peters Valley Craft Center in Layton, NJ.
He is the Operations Director of Brickhouse Ceramic Arts Center in Long Island City, NY. Previously he was the Operations Director of the Clay Art Center in Port Chester, NY. He teaches ongoing classes in ceramics at Brickhouse Ceramic Arts Center and stone carving at the Educational Alliance Art School.
Prior to joining Clay Art Center, Doug worked for 26 years as a master stone carver and stone shop manager. His stone work can be seen on buildings throughout the New York City area, including the Cloisters, Grace Church, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Museum of the City of NY, the NBA Store, the Benjamin Hotel, and the New York Public Library.
